Welcome to Rowboat, proprietary software for parsing, examining, storing, sharing, and visualizing data files. Rowboat is provided and controlled by Rowboat LLC, a Massachusetts limited liability company, acting by and through its managing member Ben Fry LLC d/b/a Fathom Information Design, a Massachusetts limited liability company (together, the “LLC”, “we”, or “us”).

This Privacy Statement explains what information the LLC collects about you through Rowboat and our website (the “Site”), how we use that data, and when and with whom we share it. The Site includes all pages within the rowboat.xyz and rowbo.at web domains (together, the “Web Domain”).

What data do we collect?

We collect a limited amount of information that you provide to us. The information collected will depend on how you use Rowboat and the Site. You may provide us with the following information:

  • User Data. The email address and password that you set when creating a Rowboat account.
  • Transactional Data. When you make a purchase via Rowboat or the Site, your transactions are processed by a third party provider. You can learn about how our third party provider handles your information in the below Privacy statements of other websites. Rowboat will collect a limited portion of the information you provide to our third party processor, including, but not limited to, the last four digits of your payment card, expiration date of payment card, cardholder name, type of payment card. >

Rowboat does not collect additional personal data or the content of files processed through Rowboat. In order to prioritize ways to improve Rowboat, we collect certain data relating to the use of the software, including, but not limited to:

  • Information relating to the structure of files being processed, such as:
    • The size and format of files processed using Rowboat;
    • The file format of the original document (i.e. CSV, TSV, or Excel);
    • The number of rows and columns in a given file; and
    • Data types by column;
  • Information relating to the use of features and services within Rowboat, such as, but not limited to:
    • Setting and unsetting the header row;
    • Changing column types;
    • Filtering data;
    • Searching data (no search terms will be saved or collected);
    • Exporting data;
    • Sharing data;
    • Changing interface themes; and
    • Interacting with charts and visualizations.
  • We use Matomo for website analytics, which collects certain data relating to the use of Rowboat, including, but not limited to:
    • Your anonymized IP address;
    • The date and time of the request;
    • The title and URL of the page being viewed;
    • URL of the page that was viewed prior to the current page (referrer URL);
    • The screen resolution being used;
    • The time in your time zone;
    • The files that were clicked and downloaded;
    • The links to any outside domain that were clicked;
    • The time it takes for webpages to be generated by the webserver and then downloaded by you (page generation time);
    • Your approximate location: country, region, city, approximate latitude and longitude;
    • Your browser’s main language (Accept-Language header) and user agent (User-Agent header); and
    • Your browser, operating system, type of device being used (desktop, tablet, mobile, etc.), brand, and model.

Rowboat also collects a small amount of information outside of Matomo. As you are unable to opt-out of this collection, please carefully review the below description of what is being collected and why:

  • The names of files opened in Rowboat are collected for the sole purpose of displaying the file name back to the user. The contents of files are not collected.
  • When Rowboat experiences a crash that causes the application to stop functioning, Rowboat will record the error message received by the user, a timestamp of the error, and the location of the error in our code. This information is collected so that we can resolve the problem as quickly as possible, as well as understand the scope of any such problems. These records do not contain your IP address or any other identifiable information.

How do we collect your data?

We collect data when you use or view Rowboat and/or the Site.

The Site uses Matomo to collect and analyze traffic and help us to improve your user experience. Matomo is an open source web analytics platform. A web analytics platform is used by a website owner in order to measure, collect, analyze and report visitors’ data for purposes of understanding and optimizing their website. Data collected outside of Matomo is gathered directly via Rowboat’s software and is securely stored on a server solely controlled by the LLC.


How will we use your data?

Rowboat and the Site collect data in order to:

  • Respond to a specific inquiry from you or provide you with access to the services provided by the LLC (the “Services”);
  • Provide, administer, maintain, improve, individualize, and evaluate the Site, the Services, or Web Domain;
  • Develop new products and services;
  • Maintain and improve the functioning and security of the Site, the Services, Web Domain, and our software, systems, and network;
  • Respond to subpoenas, court orders, or other legal process; in response to a request for cooperation from law enforcement or another government agency; to investigate, prevent, or take action regarding actual or suspected violations of our Terms of Service, illegal activities, fraud, security or technical issues, misuse of the Site, the Services or Web Domain, or other misconduct, or to enforce our Terms of Service; as otherwise may be required by applicable law; or to protect our rights, property, or safety or those of others;
  • Share anonymized or aggregated information with the public and with third parties, including but not limited to researchers and partners; and
  • Achieve any purpose described elsewhere in this Privacy Statement.

We will not sell your data.


How do we store your data?

Data is stored securely on a cloud server solely controlled by the LLC. We have implemented appropriate technical and organizational controls to protect data from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access or disclosure. Unfortunately, sending any information, including personal data and personally identifiable information, via the internet is not completely secure. While all information is passed in an encrypted manner, given the nature of communications and information processing technology, the LLC cannot guarantee that data during transmission through the Internet or while stored on our systems or otherwise in our care will be absolutely safe from intrusion by others.


What are your data protection rights?

The LLC would like to make sure you are fully aware of all of your data protection rights. Every user is entitled to the following:

  • The right to access — You have the right to request from us copies of your personal data. We may charge you a small fee for this service.
  • The right to rectification — You have the right to request that the LLC correct your personal data if you believe it is inaccurate. You also have the right to request the LLC to complete the data you believe is incomplete.
  • The right to erasure — You have the right to request that the LLC erase your personal data, under certain conditions.
  • The right to restrict processing — You have the right to request that the LLC restrict the processing of your personal data, under certain conditions.
  • The right to object to processing — You have the right to object to the LLC’s processing of your personal data, under certain conditions.
  • The right to data portability — You have the right to request that the LLC transfer the personal data that we have collected on your to another organization, or directly to you, under certain conditions.
